Shown here is the application of
Acoustography for inspecting parts
containing tight radii. Note the presence of defect (B) along the tight
radii. This specimen could be evaluated in only seconds by simply rotating
the part under Acoustography system's field-of-view. Moreover, a relatively
inexperienced operator was required to perform the inspection.
C-scan inspection of such specimens is not efficient and can be costly because
of up front modeling and programming required to create a contour following scan
plan. Therefore, a common practice in industry for such cases is to employ
manual inspection techniques, such as acquiring and analyzing A-scans along the
radii. However, the A-scan method is very laborious and prone to errors
inherent to manual methods, such as operator fatigue, subjectivity, and human
error. Acoustography provides a simple and affordable alternative to
conventional A-scan and C-scan method for the inspecting parts containing tight
radii.
